STARTS 10/2: Cone 6 Hands-on Glazing Workshop with John Britt - 10/2 to 10/4

In this workshop, renowned potter John Britt will present an overview of ceramic glazes with an emphasis on mid-range (cone 6) firing. While this class is intended for beginners to intermediate potters, it's open to all skill levels.

Reviewing glaze classifications of glazes, like ash, celadon, temmoku, etc., John will explain the chemistry and function of each glaze type, methods for achieving desired surfaces, strategies for adjusting glaze recipes and approaches to finding or developing new glazes. Students will spend a day making their own glazes; ACH will fire test tiles so we can review + discuss results as a group.

Additionally, John will review cones, kilns, firing dynamics and the application of these principles to a variety of firing schedules.

Selected glazes from his book, The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes: Glazing and Firing at Cone 4–7, will be examined in greater depth than in the published text.

Whether you’re ready to start developing your own mid-range glazes or simply curious about the glaze world, this workshop will give you the tools, knowledge and confidence to start exploring glazes!

TOOLS
Please review the Student Supply List for all required tools. ACH will provide some tools, but students are expected to bring their own items from the Student Supply List.

CLAYS + TEST TILES
ACH will provide and fire 10x of the following test tiles:

• Frost
• Terry with Grog
• Night

Due to the nature of this class, students may not bring in personal test tiles.

ATTIRE
Please dress comfortably and wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and/or staining. Feel free to bring your own apron.

LUNCH WILL NOT BE PROVIDED
We will provide water + canned beverages. Please be prepared to bring food to eat during a 30-minute lunch break. Limited fridge space and microwave use.

• One N-95 to N-100 dust mask or OSHA approved respirator and a quart size zip lock bag (with your name on it) to keep it in.
• One immersion blender
• One digital scale (accurate to 0.1 grams)
• One 1-gallon bucket
• Notebook + pen

John Britt is a studio potter in Bakersville, North Carolina who has been a potter and teacher for over 40 years. He lives in mountains of western North Carolina although he grew up in Dayton, Ohio. John is primarily a self-taught potter who has worked and taught extensively, both nationally and internationally, at universities, colleges and craft centers, including the Penland School of Crafts where he served as the Clay Coordinator and then as the Studio’s Manager.

He is the author of the “The Complete Guide to High-Fire Glaze; Glazing & Firing at Cone 10” which was published by Lark Books in 2004, and his most recent book “The Complete Guide to Midrange Glazes: Glazing and Firing at Cone 6” which will be published October 2014. He also has and two e-books: “The Quest for the Illusive Leaf Bowl and Other Assorted Articles” and “Aventurine Glazes”. He also has a DVD produced by Ceramics Daily entitled : “Understanding Glazes: How to Test, Tweak and Perfect Your Glazes”.

He was the juror for the book; “500 Bowls”, Technical Editor for “The Art and Craft of Ceramics”, and the “Ceramic Glaze: The Complete Handbook” by Brian Taylor and Kate Doody. He has written numerous articles for ceramics publications including: Ceramic Review, Studio Potter, Clay Times, Ceramic Technical, New Ceramics, The Log Book and is a frequent contributor to Ceramics Monthly.
