Originally developed to look like snow on the tips of ceramic tree branches, lava glaze works well when applied on top of a glaze where it puffs up.
 
Lava glaze provides a unique decorative surface for raku or other lowfire applications.
Applied thickly, it aggressively forms a cracked surface upon firing. It can be stained with oxides and stains to achieve various colors.
 
Though these are lead free, they are not dinnerware safe.
